Description of Rib Fabric
Clearly defined repeating lines make it easy to identify rib fabric. Rib fabric uses a basic stitch on weft knitting machines that require two sets of needles operating at right angles to each other. Rib knits have a lot of elasticity and are commonly used for sleeve bands, neckbands, and sweater waistbands. Lightweight sweaters in rib knits provide a close, body-hugging fit similar to Ponte Roma but not as tight. Rib knits tend to be more durable and provide more stretch than jersey knitted fabrics.

Think back to that jersey T-shirt. The neck band is probably a rib knit. Rib is made by alternating knit and purl stitches to form ridges on both sides of the fabric. Rib knit lies flat and has more stretch in the width than the length. Rib makes great neckbands and cuffs because of this elasticity.
